Quimper

Quimper is a town in Western Brittany, very close to the coast. In fact it is so close, that one can hear seagulls and view them flying around town. If you have the change to visit here I would suggest renting a car, it is easier to get around the little villages, and also allows one to create their own personal itinerary.

I found the local cuisine to be really fresh, tasty and indulgent. Whether your drinking the local cidre, or eating a galette de sarrasin ( buckwheat gluten free crepe), eating the local camembert cheese or just strolling around town, one cannot help but feel to be transported back a couple hundred years. I definitely want to come back and explore more of the small farms and forests that penetrate the lands, also go to some of the islands and see the aged lighthouses that are sprinkled on Brittany’s coastline.

So far on this trip I have been arriving around the hours of 6pm or later to my hotel. I have been to six different hotels so far! Grocery stores close around 8pm (sometimes later), so I am rushing to get water and a small bite to eat. When I went to the Quimper Carrefour (French grocery store), I was pleasantly surprised to see a whole refrigerated section of tart crusts, ready to be rolled out and baked! Also a section of packaged crepes that looked delicious.

Here’s some photos of foodie items I found intriguing, I had started to buy some items for my family and things that I would like to bring home. There is so many chocolate and pastry places here, its difficult to resist, but I try not to go crazy!

There are two creperies I ate at that I like to mention, both were good, but the latter was formidable (great).

La Krampouzerie

9, rue du Salle, Quimper France

I started my meal with a delicious apple cider (beware these have alcohol in them, not like the pomme de jus which is just apple juice). Most of the cider I have been drinking has been in the 5-7% range, not a lot of alcohol, but for me enough to feel it. Also, most of the ciders I’ve seen are from local producers and many are bio - organic. I ate a savory crepe with salmon and this cream chive sauce. I finished my dinner with a sweet apple, caramel beurre and almond crepe. Both were wonderful and I walked home in the cold with my belly happy and my heart content.

Creperie Chez Mamie

4 Impasse de la Gare, 29000 Quimper

The second crepe spot I ate at was just by luck. It was my last night in Quimper, very rainy and cold and I wasn’t feeling too well. The next day was a long travel day, so i just wanted to eat and retire to ma chambre. Although I throughly enjoyed my first crepe meal, I was floored at how good the crepes were at this second spot. I really enjoyed how bien cuit these crepes were (crispy) and also the sauce was just extra here. My first crepe was a salmon again, but this time there was a leek sauce (I’m thinking creme fraiche) that was filled into the crepe. The second crepe I ate was another savory one with camembert cheese, and it was so good. Both crepes were made with sarassin flour, so they were buckwheat (gluten free). I also must mention the cidre I drank, Cidre Bio from Cidre Sehedic. I unfortunately didn’t take any photos of my meal, I was too busy enjoying. But I did take photos of the open hours and the front of the restaurant, which is right across the street from the Gare de Quimper - Quimper train station.
